Parent Connection meets monthly. There are available many sub-committees (special interest groups) such as: Fund Raising, Black History Month, Cinco de Mayo, Health Fair, Bus Transportation, Family Night Programs, Community Pride Day, and Membership. Diversifying the interest areas for parents should enable the Academy to increase the number of parents participating, thus strengthening the Parent Connection organization.

The potential for special interest parent committees to form and be productive has already proven true. One group of parents requested more activities for children in grades 3 and 4. In response, parents of grade 3-4 students were surveyed. The survey uncovered several parents who volunteered to coach basketball. The parents met and organized, resulting in both a girls and boys team from grades 3-4.

Further, the Academy has developed working partnerships with a number of community organizations and agencies. These relationships are such that both the partner organization and the Academy benefit. We have partnerships with the following organizations:

Applegate Chevrolet
Baker College
Citizens Nuisance Task Force
Crossover
Flint Police Department
Genesee County Family Court, Judge Duncan Beagle (School Attendance,

   Punctuality,  & Behavior)
Genesee County Committee for Community Peace
Genesee County Land Bank
Genesys Reginoal Medical Center
Health Acccess
Michigan State Cooperative Extension
MTA (Mass Transportation Authority)
Salvation Army
South Side Business & Neighborhood Association

TWS (Together WE Stand) Ministries
University of Michigan-Flint
Walker Farms

As we develop programs, activities and events with these organizations, we do so with the involvement and participation of parents. For example, MSU Cooperative Extension and Mott-Hashbarger Farm will provide expertise and other resources for Academy families to participate in a Family Gardening Program at Mott-Hashbarger Children's Farm. The Adopt-A-House Paint Program will be conducted in the neighborhood surrounding our Academy. Academy parents, students, and staff members, as well as neighborhood and community residents will participate jointly with that organization to paint the homes of the disabled, senior citizens, and low-income families who own their own home, but are unable to endure the cost of painting their home.
