Students | Lower School

The Lower School at the International Academy of Flint consists of students in grades Kindergarten through 6. Lower School students are involved in special programs designed to increase their involvement in the school community and to promote character education and academics. Some of the most noteable include:

Accelerated Reader (A.R.): In the AR program students are challenged to read a large variety of books at, or slightly above, their reading level. Through S.T.A.R. testing at the beginning of each year teachers are made aware of their students' reading levels and thus can assist them in choosing books at their reading ability level. After reading the books, students can take computerized AR tests to earn points. The points can be turned in periodically throughout the year for prizes at our AR store. Each term, Lower School students are challenged to read a certain total number of books.
At the end of Each term, we celebrate their reading achievements during our AR Assembly. Students earn rewards if they meet the challenge for the term. For instance, they may earn a "crazy hat day" or a "mixed up clothes day". If they exceed the challenge, the teachers have to dress up too! At the end of the year we set a year long challenge and if the students meet it, the AQC must perform a crazy stunt, such as kissing a pig, or getting dunked in a dunk tank!

Gold Slips and WOW Slips: Lower School students at IAF can receive special recognition for getting "caught being good". Gold Slips are small yellow coupons that are given out whenever a staff member "catches" a student going above and beyond, helping others, or simply doing the right thing when others are not. Students then drop their gold slips into the bucket on the Lower School AQC's desk. Once a month names are drawn from the bucket and 1 student in each class gets to have a McDonald's lunch...on us! WOW slips are like giant gold slips that are rewarded to an entire class which displays outstanding behavior. Teachers post the WOW slips outside of their classrooms and at the end of the month the class with the most WOWs get a donut and cider breakfast...on us! Gold slips and WOW slips help our students to understand the value of doing the right thing while at school.

Student Life™ in Lower School: Lower School students are involved in the Student Life™ program as well. Students in grades 4-6 can sign up for a variety of prefecting responsibilities, including hallway duty, cafeteria duty, recess duty, teacher's helpers, library prefecting, and school beautification duties. Grades 4-6 also have activity period each week and can sign up for a variety of clubs or sessions in lieu of recess. Some of the activities offered currently are Math Games, Movie Club, Wide Awake Club Writing, and AR Club.
